Bilstein shocks or suspension question?
Ahmed A asked:
hi to all,
i have a 2002 vw bora/jetta 1.6L engine, i live in cairo egypt, 60% of the roads here arent good you can have lots of surprises like open manholes lots of cat eyes in the middle of the roads, heavy bumps, etc… it means poor quality roads, so my car stock front shocks felt hard so i went to check them at my mechanic and i found that they are leaking oil and need to be replaced so i replaced with normal bilstein shocks in the front only(normal ones with black colour, gas pressure). so after approx. a year the ride become harder so i went to the vw service and they told me that the bushings(rubber thing above the shock needs to be replaced and all the suspension parts are good), so i change them and the car felt awesome and smoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth, but much less than 3 months the car went hard again, so is this a bad shock or the bushing doesnt last that much, and for information my rear shocks are stock and needs replacement going for 115000km now!!!, and i have 17″rims with 225/45 tires, and one more thing if i need replacing will i go with stocks again(vw,sachs) or koni(i like smooth rides more but ineed something to last about 3+ years) so please guys help!!!
Guys my car was bought from UAE arabian gulf region with GCC specs(arabian gulf specs resisting heat, smooth suspension, enhanced ac,etc….) my standard wheels were 16″ .
and the thing that i replace wasnt the bushings it was the big cirlce hamburger looking rubber i think called suspension mount.

Go with a stock VW shock, it lasted from 2002 to a year ago. Going with Bilstein/Koni etc. gives you a stiffer performance shock, driven or rough roads you sacrifice the lifespan of the performance part.

BILSTEIN ARE THE BEST GAS SHOCK IN THE MARKET AND FOR BUSHING REPLACE THEM WITH POLY URATHENE BUSHINGS AND BY GOING TO LARGER WHEELS THAT ALSO EFFECTS THE RIDE QUALITYOR SPEND LITTLE MORE MONEY AND GET SOME COIL OVER SHOCKS.

low profile 225/45 tires will hammer your shocks and suspension in general, on really bad roads never go below 70 profiles if you want your suspension bushes to last, that’s why the standard car has 15″ wheels

Shock Absorbers
sounds like rear shocks
I live in Chicago Il USA
we have really bad roads here also
i was gonna suggest maybe looking at 15 or 16 inch wheels
because there is more sidewall in those type tire
and more sidewall on a bad road makes it drive nicer and less harsh
