How do I know if the shocks are going bad on my 1994 dodge ram?

First off if you haven’t replaced shocks ever it is a safe bet that you need them. The “fifth shock” isn’t a shock it is a steering stabilizer.Your truck is 14 years old you may want to weigh the cost benefit to replacing them or just running the thing into the ground.

Have a mechanic check out your tire wear pattern if your not familiar, it can tell you whats wrong with alot of things such as if part of your tire looks flat on one section if its feathered ext they can pin point what causes that symtom but if its that old replacing might not be a bad idea.

jump up and down on the bumber and if when you jump off the truck continues to bounce they need replaced

hit a bump..it keeps bouncing… on corners it wallows like a pig,,, good shocks last 50,000 but iv driven them 100.000 because I’m cheap and poor… steering “shock ” keeps truck going where u point it after hitting bump/hole… after 125.000 miles its a given u need ball joints shocks,,tie rod ends.. and a few other goodies in the steering dept>>

that’s a steering stabilizer shock it just stops the steering wheel from shaking when you hit a bump ,it helps absorb the shock from the road bumps,you can do a bounce test on the shocks to see if their bad,bounce up and down on the truck a few times,and it if it bounces more than three times when you stop bouncing it,the shocks are bad,good luck ,hope you had a very good x-mas.

It’s really hard to tell on leaf spring when shocks get weak. As a rule of thumb, Just replace them around 50 to 80 thousand miles. You know they aren’t doing as good a job with that many miles on them. One way to check shocks on trucks with coil springs is to bounce the corner of the suspected weak shock up and down several times an let go. If it’s good, that corner will go back up and back down slightly and stop. If not, It will continue to bounce several times. That thing going cross ways is called a stabilizer. It keeps the front wheels from shimmying. If it goes bad, the truck will shake and shimmy when you hit a bump. And if the joint on the track bar (where it fastens to the frame) get the least bit loose, the truck will road walk.
