I have a 98 Pontiac Grand AM GT, do shocks and struts come on both front and back ends of the car?
t_block asked:
I think they need to be replaced because the car sounds like it is going to fall apart from underneath when I hit a small bump in the road, but the question is which would I need to get replaced shocks or struts? What do each of them do? How do I know if I have shocks/struts on either end of the car so I don’t get ripped off by a less-than-truthful mechanic?

Struts in the front, technically shocks in the rear but they are often called struts. Doesn’t matter, the guy behind the counter at the shop will know what you mean when you say you want all four struts replaced.
PS
I’d get the front coil springs replaced at the same time. They are prone to breaking on Grand Am’s of that vintage and the old ones have to come out with the struts anyway so its a good time for preventive maintenance.
