lizgas asked:

We usually go to Hinda to have our servicing done such as oil changes and alignments and things of that nature. we were told that at 60k miles our car needed a major maintenance. so my husband has asked me to look in to this. i am basically souble checking to make sure all this is really needed and its not just honda “suggestions” here is the list.
Oil & Filter Change

Inspect fluids – fill as needed

Inspect accessory belts

Change transmission fluid

Change antifreeze

Complete engine tune – includes:

Replace rotor – Inspect dist. Cap

Replace air element

Set engine to specs

Inspect emission controls

Replace Brake Fluid

Inspect brake lining – front & rear

Inspect brake calipers & wheel cylinders

Adjust rear brakes – inspect bearings

Adjust parking brake

Inspect exhaust system & muffler

Inspect suspension mounting bolts

Inspect steering operation

Rotate tires as needed

Air tires to 30lbs P.S.I.

Check battery – fill as needed

Inspect air conditioning

Road test vehicle

Quality control inspection’

I am sorry I am very skeptical on car manufacturos suggestions. My husband as a VW and many times he has gone in there are gotten a $300-1000 quote on things that in the end he ends up spending $30-250 by purchasing the part himself and having a friend install it.

If you could help me out and give me a list of the things that i really need to do I would really appreciate it. We bought the van in November of 04. They had an oil change and tune up done when we purchased it.

It’s a racket, don’t fall for it. Oil change regularly and check other stuff yourself regularly.

    Get discount suspension parts.

60k is fairly cheap in comparison to next one. I am a Honda owner to and their “scheduled maintenance” is just what the factory or car/van (whatever) maker suggests. If you look at this list a lot of these things are routine fluid changes and simple checks that they generally inspect but do not fix if there is no need. The Honda dealership where I live is competitive with oil change prices and what not and I have complete faith in them. VW’s are a different story, which is why I opted to buy a Pilot rather than the Jetta I was looking at. I know three “bug” owners who love their car but **** having anything done to it because of the insane costs. BMW was notorious for the same which is why some companies are now offering free maintenance. With Honda they should have it on the wall what the scheduled maintenance is for that mileage. That is standard for ANY Honda. This also tells you up front how much it costs. Generally they send me a coupon in the mail if I am late with it. Anyway I have found my dealership to be pretty upfront with me about costs. I guess I am lucky. I bought from Dobbs Honda and they have been nothing but great to me. But if you don’t wish to take it there don’t. I will say however I would not be “skeptical” about the timing belt change. Granted my Honda has said that on some models they have pushed it back 120k miles. That will seriously bite you in the tail though if you fail to get it done and it fails.

the major service with the filters is done at 60k. it usually runs between $275-300 out here in southern california at a Honda dealer.

at 67500 all you need is a tire rotation and oil and filter change, provided you did the major service. during the tire rotation they typically check and clean the brakes and do the undercarriage safety inspections.

you don’t change the transmission fluid until 100k. you don’t have a distributor cap and rotor, you have independent ignition coils. the brake fluid should be changed every 3 years (no mileage, only time) so you don’t need it if you’ve had it done already. coolant is changed at 105,000 miles.

my honda dealer charges $79 for this “minor service”. that’s what the book calls for.

    hope that helps
