method for more ground clearance in a Potiac Montana 2001?
smart boratt brother asked:
I am trying to find an inexpensive way to get 3-5 inches more ground clearance for this vehicle. Is it a matter of air adjustable shocks? Bigger springs? tweaking the suspension? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
GT….the reason is it is so low I hit parking blocks with the front bumper and have to take inclines at an angle. Now and then I like to go camping, and I know with this vehicle I could never make it through the ruts.
It seems strange I know. I can’t afford another vehicle

Ground clearance is obtained by raising your axles. A body lift doesn’t give you clearance for high obstacles in the road. IMHO there is no inexpensive way to gain that much clearance without creating safety issues.
Best way to gain clearance is taller tires. This creates problems in regards to power, ( and possible stability issues) which means you will need to change your axles to make up the difference for the extra height of the new tires, for example, you’ll probably have to change the existing axle ratio to something nearing the 5.00 range. Otherwise, you’ll notice a BIG drain on power.
My question is why do you need extra clearance? Why not buy something that already is designed to perform the function that you need, instead of modifying something to do what its not designed for.

at most auto parts stores like auto zone, checkers, and pep boys, they have these amazing little rubber peices that you can pick up for under $20.00 for a pair that you can put in between the springs of your shocks, If you have air shocks I wouldn’t recomend putting more air in than is supposed to be. you can refer to your retailer you got them from for that info.
If you 4-wheel a lot it’s ok they’r heavy duty!
